The Trans-Am race series was created in 1966 by the SCCA. Plymouth entered the Barracuda Formula S through Team Star-Fish in this inaugural season. Drivers included Richard Petty, Scott Harvey, Bruce Jennings and Charles Rainville. The Barracuda proved to be formidable in the corners, however, it lost out on the straights to the Mustang.

25 August 2008 Share In 1970, Plymouth entered SCCA Trans-Am racing, contracting with Dan Gurney’s All American Racers (AAR) to build and campaign cars to be driven by him and Swede Savage. At that time, SCCA homologation requirements dictated that a manufacturer build a minimum of 2,500 street versions in order to compete.

In 1975, the Trans Am Series was restructured based on the SCCA Club Racing's fastest production car classes. Group 4 and 5 cars were added to the mix in 1976, and the Trans Am Series went to a two-class system-Category I and II. In 1978, Greg Pickett won the Category II drivers' title, in a Chevrolet Corvette.

To qualify for Trans-Am racing, Plymouth and Dodge had to sell 2,400 (each) 1970 Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda and Challenger T/A models. Both were equipped with a 290 hp. 340 cubic inch Six-Pack engine that used the stronger 305 cubic inch racing block (Note- Trans-Am was cast right onto the side of it).

The Plymouth AAR Cuda was only produced in 1970 and in limited production, A total of 2724 were built. 1120 were 4 speeds and 1604 were automatics and were built from March 11th till April 20th. The AAR Cuda was built to compete in the SCAA road racing championship series. Chrysler teamed up with Dan Gurney.
