Ray-tracing programs like POV-Ray start with their simulated camera and trace rays backwards out into the scene. The user specifies the location of the camera, light sources, and objects as well as the surface texture properties of objects, their interiors (if transparent) and any atmospheric media such as fog, haze, or fire.

In the default, non-recursive method ( +AM1 ), POV-Ray initially traces one ray per pixel. If the color of a pixel differs from its neighbors (to the left or above) by at least the set threshold value then the pixel is super-sampled by shooting a given, fixed number of additional rays.

scene description (*.pov file) raytracing options (*.ini file) The raytracing calculation is then run as a background job that can be monitored or canceled using the Task Panel. Several raytracing parameters can be set in the POV-Ray Optionspreferences. See also: exporting a scene, tips on preparing images Lights and Shadows

The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (POV-Ray) is included with Chimera. POV-Ray images can be saved: Only the PNG (*.png) image format can be saved. In addition to images, files for POV-Ray containing the scene (*.pov) and the raytracing options (*.ini) may be generated. Various raytracing parameters can be set in the POV-Ray Options preferences .

POV-Ray for Windows requires Windows XP or later, and has been tested on versions up to and including Windows 8. We recommend having at least 100mb or so of free disk space (for temporary file storage during renders) and at least 1GB of available memory, though less is OK if you are not doing complicated scenes.

Brightness, contrast, the number of lights, and their directions can be adjusted with the Lighting tool or lighting command, and are propogated to POV-Ray for raytracing. By default, only the key light produces shiny highlights and shadows. Shadows from raytracing can be made less severe by decreasing the contrast.
