Bracing of the type used at Martin in the pre-war era was a time consuming process requiring highly-skilled labor shaping each brace by hand with a chisel. By the time Martin opened their new factory in 1961 they were years behind in filling dealer orders, even after 15 years of cutting out the step of scalloping braces.

Willi Henk sent these to show tucked braces that were used on the prewar dreadnoughts. charlie Hi Strung 253 14 Registered Member Mar 11, 2008 #11 The rattles are in there full time. The rattles also gather the dust devils in the guitar to a convenient place for removal. Not sure if that matters, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt. FoolForWood 8,233 13

We have had much discussion on replicating the tone of a 1935 Martin dreadnought and this is one of the things that came up - along with bracing pattern, top tension, body dimensions, neck reinforcement, finish and so on. Pre-War? - The Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum

In the 1930s Martin had begun using a metal T-rod to strengthen the neck and, inside the body, shifted the X-brace closer to the bridge to help offset the additional strain that string tension put on the top. (On most models this had been accomplished by 1935, with the Dreadnoughts following by 1939).
What exactly is "Pre-War" bracing? - The Acoustic Guitar Forum

In the 1940s, Martin moved the X bracing away from the soundhole to its current position and quit scalloping braces. According to Martin, they did this due to the preponderance of players using heavy -gauge strings to boost their volume. The light bracing pattern coupled with heavy strings resulted in a high damage rate.
Define "Pre-War" - The Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum

"Postwar" is 1945 on with tapered brace voicing, even though the Pacific War wasn't over until august of 1945. People used to say "prewar", meaning scalloped brace voicing through 1944. That matches my experience exactly. It was indeed true that Martin was changing 38-39-40-41 -- mostly bracing and neck widths/profiles.
X Marks the Spot - Early X - Bracing

While the 12 fret Martin has always had "forward bracing" the 14 fret became "rear braced", with the cross of the X located further back from the sound hole. Single 0 and double 0 Martins had their braces moved in 1936, while the 000 and Dreadnaught became "rear shifted" in mid 1938. Martin 1944 000-18 Martin Bracing Diagrams
