On pre-war Martins, the "X" crosses about 1" below the soundhole. The result is that the bridge rests less directly atop the main X-braces and transfers more of its vibration to the top. In the 1940s, Martin moved the X bracing away from the soundhole to its current position and quit scalloping braces.

"Postwar" is 1945 on with tapered brace voicing, even though the Pacific War wasn't over until august of 1945. People used to say "prewar", meaning scalloped brace voicing through 1944. That matches my experience exactly. It was indeed true that Martin was changing 38-39-40-41 -- mostly bracing and neck widths/profiles.

With a vintage-V neck shape and the classic features of dreadnaught Carolinas, the 000 models have great playability and tone. The big, well-balanced tone on these guitars is exceptional especially because of the pre-war style construction. The fully scalloped forward-x bracing is a 1930's style that adds strength and resonance to lower registers and more clarity to the highs.

It was a feature found on Martin guitars made during the height of the folk revival of the 1960s & "70s. Here's the classic scalloped brace design of a 1943 D-18: Notice the scooped out areas of the lower diagonal braces and the lower end of the big cross braces. All the upper braces, from the intersection of the "X" to the neck, are identical.
