Yes, it is OK. It's most important to wax the sides and deck to protect them from hazing, color fading and chalking from the sun. Some people think waxing the bottom makes it go faster, but experienced performance boaters know a waxed bottom makes surface tension greater and increases drag.

We DO NOT recommend waxing your hull with a paste wax, such as most car waxes. The wax fills in any scratches or gouges, then dries to a white color, making the damage more apparent. If you have a plastic/polyethylene vessel, you may not need to use a kayak wax, as kayak wax tends to be more recommended for composite vessels. However, you can still apply …

Avoid using the average car wax, i.e. Turltle wax, and other polishes. A can of WD-40 actually does the job best as a finish product, after a mild soap/ warm water is used for washing any dirt or grime. Spray on the WD-40, then wipe away with a paper towel. Avoid using regular rags because of …

There's no virtue in waxing your polyethylene hull. For one, the wax will not stick to it and one of the performance benefits of a wax coat is that it leaves a smoother surface, ie: less resistance to forward motion. On polyethylene hulls, wax won't smooth out the hull nor stick so don't waste your time and money on this.

It is also true that Americia's Cups boats wax and polish their hulls before every race. Buy some good teflon wax and try a small area then get a wet rag and slide over it and see if you can feel the difference. You will never see a ski racer go with out wax. They also have some structure in the ski to help break surface tension.
Waxing a kayak make it "faster" - NSPN Message Board

The first is that waxing will make the hull surface smoother, slipperier and faster. The other is that wax causes water to bead up on the hull and the added surface tension actually makes your boat slower. My experience has been that neither is true…” My own opinion is that the difference in speed is negligible. -Leon Quote Phil Allen Paid Member
