The OEM powerglide was manufactured with two first gear ratios - 1.76 and 1.82. The 1.82 gear set is not suitable for most drag racing applications as its power limit is no more than ~ 550 HP engines in even lightweight cars. Why? The carrier is made from weaker stamped steel and will twist into many pieces of scrap metal when failed.

Same case, only changed the planetary & the other parts to go to the lighter 6 cyl planetary w 1.98 gear set. The 1.96 is built on the 1.76 style carrier and quite a bit heavier than the 1.98 setup.

my car is 2450# with a sbc 434, powerglide, 5000 stall, rear is 4.56 tires are 32.5, runs 9.30's @ 145. I have a stock 1.76 first gear and they make 1.64, 1.65, 1.69, 1.76, 1.80 & 1.96. The long tailshaft Powerglide (27-9/16 overall) is within a 1/4-inch in length to the 200-4R (27-11/16), however, there were three different Powerglide lengths so it is best to check it first. Powergildes also came with a shorter tail shaft case so overall length could be 25-3/8 or no tailshaft at all (18 inches shorty race transmissions) Reply
