Spark Ignition Each of the engine’s cylinders has at least one spark plug (and sometimes two) to initiate combustion. High voltage from an ignition coil flows to the center electrode of the spark plug, causing the plug to fire when the spark jumps the electrode gap at the end of the plug.

Usually .035" is around the best gap, even though many instruction manuals say to open your gap to .045". Go ahead and try that, but when it doesn't run as good, or it drops cylinders at high RPM because that wider / weaker spark can't light the cylinders consistently, you'll know why.

The very most important rule when checking or adjusting spark plug gap is, to never pry, apply or exert any force on the spark plug center electrode, or center electrode ceramic insulator. The force should be applied ONLY on the spark plug ground electrode strap moving it closer or further away from the spark plug center electrode.
spark plug gap - Don Terrill’s Speed-Talk

On average most of the time you would end up with around a .032" gap with your application. In my all out naturally aspirated drag race SBC which is 15.5:1 compression and high rpm I use .020" gap. With .032" gap it had a stumble and a miss. The more cylinder pressure you have, the less gap you need.

“When you increase compression or cylinder pressure by adding boost or nitrous the plug gap has to be reduced accordingly. Turbo and blower cars running substantial boost on alcohol perform their best with plug gaps of around 0.019in.” On mildly tuned engines Brock recommends 0.030in to 0.035in. Reality is that for high-boost applications with stock coils, you're going to have to do two things regardless of the brand of plug: 1) Close up the plug gap. Yeah, that may increase misfire at idle, but better to have it at idle than at WOT. 2) Go cold in heat range. At least one range and, better yet, two ranges colder than OE.
