Rear shifted bracing means the X and all attendant bracing is moved farther back from the soundhole towards the lower bout. Since the bridge stays in the same location, the span of bridge/bridgeplate across the X bracing becomes a bit shorter and "tighter".

Forward shifted versus rear shifted bracing - The ...

On rear shifted bracing, the x-braces are under the thicker part of the bridge, so there is less flexibility. That puts more force on the brace joints. I have seen hundreds of loose x-braces in the bridge area, and almost all have been rear braced. Straight braced, rear position are the worst, because the braces themselves are stiffer.

So everything else (including the current "standard" position) is in fact rear-shifted. But, like John said, from the late thirties to the late fifties, it was rear-shifted even more. So it's possible Martin means the extra rear-shifted position (somewhere between 1 3/4" and almost 2" from the soundhole). However, since the modern GE-style bracing is always forward, they could …

John, my preferred terms are forward bracing, rear shifted bracing, and modern bracing. (The forward bracing was never shifted anywhere since that was the original position.) The nominal 1" from the sound hole is where the Dreadnaught bracing started before it was shifted to about 1 7/8" in 1939. It was moved forward to the modern 1 1/2 ...

Apparently, and I say apparently because of my lack of experience, the forward bracing (1") is the more bassier sound because there is more of the top behind the "X" brace to vibrate - then the rear bracing (1-7/8") if it has the Golden Era (aggressive) scalloping will also have similar bass sound as the forward shifted. The middle bracing(1.5") will have the least bass.

The two sound bracings described above are also divided into X Standard, X Forward Shifted, or X Rear Shifted. The X Standard’s X-cross point is 1.5 inches from the sound hole, providing the most average sound, whether it’s treble or bass (eg Martin D28 , Martin D41, Martin OM42, Martin D45 guitar, etc.)

What is "Forward-shifted Bracing"?

Forward-shifted Bracing. Share this page: By Sweetwater on Mar 17, 2009, 12:00 AM. Literally, shifting the position of the X-bracing under an acoustic guitar’s top forward, toward the soundhole / neck. One quick note: Currently there is one Martin guitar, the D-28 Authentic 1941, that actually has rear-shifted bracing where the center of the X is 1-7/8". You can read more about my experiences with that model here. For those of you who may have had questions regarding bracing, I hope this clears things up. ...
