The Russ Laursen Classic began back in 1970 at Superior for both the late model and sprint car divisions following the untimely death of Russ in a sprint car crash at Fairmont, Minnesota. At the time, Russ was survived by his wife Gloria and his three sons, Brent, Steve and Kimm. Brent and Steve went on to have successful racing careers themselves.
