The salt flats were first discovered to be driveable when a man by the name of Bill Rishel and two of his business partners drove a Pierce-Arrow across the salt in 1907. Teddy Tetzlaff would be the first to set a land speed record which he did in a custom-built 200hp car known as the Blitzen-Benz - setting the record at 141.73 mph.
