The HD-35 however, has 1/4″ scalloped and that is THE echoiest, most intense undertone resonance of the lot. I just played a Custom Shop Jumbo today at Maury’s Music, it was basically ordered as an OM-28 in the Jumbo body size, but forward-shifted, scalloped 1/4″ bracing like the HD-35. Mammoth undertone.

It was a feature found on Martin guitars made during the height of the folk revival of the 1960s & "70s. Here's the classic scalloped brace design of a 1943 D-18: Notice the scooped out areas of the lower diagonal braces and the lower end of the big cross braces. All the upper braces, from the intersection of the "X" to the neck, are identical.

The OM-28V has quarter inch scalloped bracing, the 000-28 5/16'' standard x bracing. Both are great guitars, the OM-28v has the much bigger sound due to the lighter bracing and the scalloping. The 000-28 is more balanced but less responsive.

Scalloped bracing on a dread can make the guitar boomy. Consequently I prefer the straight bracing on my D28 rather thand the scalloped HD28 I once owned. If your home is very warm and dry in winter definitely invest in a good humidifier and hygrometer and keep an eye on relative humidity.

Scalloped braces are scooped out between two high points at each end of the brace, lending the look of suspension bridge. This reduces the brace’s weight and allows the luthier to control where the brace is flexible and where it is stiff.
