February 1, 2022 Fifteen greyhounds died and 197 injuries to animals were recorded at Shawfield Stadium between 2017 and 2020, according to new figures. Official data from Greyhound Board of Great Britain ( GBGB) also shows that across the UK, during the same period, there were 3,153 greyhound deaths and 18,345 recorded injuries.

Opened in 1898, Shawfield Stadium was home to Clyde FC until 1986, and since 1932 has been used for greyhound racing. It also hosted boxer Benny Lynch's successful defence of his world championship flyweight title in 1937 in front of a crowd of 40,000. The stadium was also home to the Glasgow Tigers speedway team between 1988 and 1998.

Campaigners are calling for an end to greyhound racing in Scotland after some dogs were found to be drugged with illegal substances such as cocaine, MSPs were told. Scotland has just one regulated race track, the Shawfield Stadium in Rutherglen near Glasgow, alongside an unregulated track at Thornton in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
