Oil pan need windage tray or not for drag race ...

If you have an aftermarket kick out pan of 7 qts you can use the accumalator like I suggested and run the pan two qts low. What we are doing with this is getting the oil stroage furter away from the spinning crank. There is no negative to a windage tray. The factory High Performance one off the Early Corvettes works great. Ed Reply

You'll get more benefit from a larger pan with a large kickout than you will a windage tray. Type of tray will also affect it. Good bolts and windage tray is a must for high rpm engines. If the engine is turning above 7K its a good thing below its not really needed. I would not use one for an engine with less than 7K rpm redline. Unless the engine is built for class racing where every hp is needed from stock or limited parts.

The windage tray is not only used as a performance adder. Trays perform another important task: allowing air bubbles to leak out of the oil before it falls into the pan, and it keeps the oil flying off the crank from blowing more air into the sump oil. Unaerated oil is the main reason for going to dry sumps.

A windage tray should be used with a stock pan. A windage tray is added insurance of oil splashing up on the crank even with a deep pan. But that seems to only happen with mega hard hitting drag cars and cars that see alot of side to side motion in something like a series of quick turns.

Craig, I have the 302 road race T-type pan and it already has a windage tray built in. When I was assembling my motor, I had a windage tray with the bottom support. the tray would not clear the pickup so I canned it after thinking about the tray in the pan. I thought it was overkill. The windage tray is ment to do 2 things. 1) Prevent the oil from getting too much "air bubbles" in it. In high RPM or race conditions the crank can fling the oil so hard and fast that it starts to act almost like whipping cream. 2)Improve horsepower. It will give 1 or 2 HP at higher RPM's due to slightly less frcition.

With any pan, get a windage tray to strip the oil from wrapping around the rotating assembly at high rpm's. Do a search to get a tray that will strip the oil from its rotation around the crankshaft. The main deal is to get the oil down into the pan & away from the rotating crankshaft. 2003 lightning daily driver.
