Sigma 38s are a little undercanvassed for racing (and IIRC the guide was very racing focussed). You'll have less (no) weight on the rail so you'll not be able to carry as much sail. Generally change down the headsails first. For family sailing you may only rarely want to use the No.1 as it is a bit of an effort to tack.
