First, I would say that I do not think size determines if a horse will be successful at barrel racing. I have ridden horses that are over 16 hands tall as well as little horses like Easy Dash Oak, aka “Round Pen,” that stands barely 15 hands tall. Photo by Springer. It would be small, but I went to an OUTDOOR rodeo last summer that was 86 feet 6 inches wide and had barrels set 20 feet off the fences for 46'6" between 1 & 2. It was set really short too with 61'6" from 1 & 2 to 3rd, which was 30' off the chutes and you had 40 feet from gate to timer, then 15 feet from timer to barrels. I think an 11.9 won it.
