By age 15, Yunick was racing motorcycles, which was how he acquired his famous nickname. While racing an old Indian Scout, the engine smoked so heavily, the track announcer gave him the name "Smokey." Yunick eventually did leave the farm and joined the Army Air Corps, where he became a B-17 pilot and flew more than 50 missions over Europe.
