Sailors are to stay to windward of the starting line until the sequence is over. We tend to run a two minute sequence for this drill as the object isn’t to get a good start, it’s to get people sailing downwind on the same ladder-rung. After the ‘start’ sailors are to race downwind to the leeward mark round and finish to windward.

Two on Two Team Racing: Race with four boats, the team with last place loses, creates lots of action. Covering Drills: 5-6 Drill: Start at pin end, sail around Digital-N, 5 hammers 6, pretending to be the 5 in a 1-4-5. 6 tries to push and pass. If 6 passes, they switch rolls. Covering Drill: Very similar to 5-6 except there is no slowing.

The Slalom Drill. The Slalom is an excellent drill when the breeze is strong. Using five marks placed in staggered windward sequence the sailors sail upwind round the windward and then gybe down through the course. This is effective because it is a closed drill and keeps the pack together even if the boats are dumping a lot.
