There is no "better" or "inferior". Only DIFFERENT. I think we can talk about characteristics of trestle vs post, without saying either is "better." Trestles give a slightly brighter, stiffer, more resistant to feedback, sound. Tone posts are slightly warmer, softer/looser.... The key seems to be, how loud do you play/how much gain do you use?

Anything made before 2003 is pre-fender. If you look inside the f-hole and see a couple thin solitar posts, then you don't have the tressle bracing. The tressle bracing is more vintage correct and seems to be more desireable amongst gretsch fans, but I say it's debatable wether or not it's "better".
