It is not fastened to the skid plate, just overlaps around the sides by a couple of inches. I can't imagine much snow or dirt could get in there as-is, but you could just put some self-tapping screws around the perimeter. Or drill holes through both the skid plate and plastic and use some of those plastic screw rivets (I'd opt for reusable ones).
