If the cam has been changed than try about 500 below the max advertised rpm of the cam (i.e. if it says 1500-6500 than try shifting at 6000) I have had good luck (on a stock 5.0) shifting at 5000 1-2, and 5200 2-3/3-4. In my fastback I'd turn it 5500 1-2, and 5800 2-3/3-4. With the new motor in the 5.0 I buzz the motor 6000 1-2 and 6200 2-3/3-4

EDIT: in other words, it is better to go to 6500rpm and shift because your rpms drop to say 4800rpm in the next gear. That is faster than shifting at 6000rpm and having your rpms drop off to 4300rpm and having to build from there vs 4800. Harder to go from 4300rpm to 6000rpm than 4800rpm to 6500rpm.

When you are racing, keep the engine in it's powerband for one. I don't own a WRX, but I know you must keep it at atleast 4,000rpm to make any good power. Practice speed shifting at first, which is only lifting off the gas enough so that the engine doesn't bounce of the rev limiter during the shift.

In Practice It Is Harder Than It Looks. Maybe surprisingly, racing car drivers rarely shift gears at the best RPM. The fastest possible acceleration theory above is clear enough. But when you start to do it for real, knowing what the best RPM to shift gears is actually more involved than it first seems. As a result there is plenty “good advice” floating about paddocks on this subject:

What I was trying to say was, when you make the shift into 2nd (after you have just about redlined in first-shift at about 6800rpm because by the time you get your foot on the clutch and off the gas it'll be at 7200rpm) if it bogs and drops RPM suddenly you've shifted too fast to let the AWD catch up.

From 2nd to 3rd you now only need about 280 lb-ft, so you actually want to shift around 6500 rpm. This is where the current torque is about 230, since when you multiply by 2.16/1.52 you get pretty close to your peak torque. From 3rd to 4th, the difference is a bit less, so you'll shift around 6400 in a stock vehicle.

Determining when to shift will depend on the motorcycle, road conditions, and take a trip rate. While most motorcycles are good shifting at 5,000 to 7,000 RPMs, it is best to judge by the sound and also feel of the engine. As you relocate quicker, its pitch will certainly boost. When the pitch is high, it is time to shift.

our engines can handle shifts up to 6000. thats why there is a rev limiter. i wouldnt suggest pegging it off the revlimiter tho. shift at about 5600 if you want to, there wont be any damage at all. gas milage will drop. but there will be no damage. to get better gas milage i do not rev it above 2000, skip 4th totally. or go from 2nd to 4th.
