I do agree with eric as far as a t-stat being used to build heat. The motor does need to make heat, but you can also go with a restrictor instead of a thermostat. But, according to studies made 50 years ago, running coolant temp of 100 degrees will make the rings wear 40 times faster than when coolant temps are 160 degrees or above. The hotter the coolant, the less wear. (I used to have the book that SAE referenced this but don't know where it is today.) Temp over 160 is critical to longevity.
