With that said, some guys will run no thermostat but use an engine oil heater, they are trying to keep the heads as cold as possible for maximum cylinder filling while the bottom end is warm enough to oil efficiently. Bore wear graph goes near vertical once you go below 160°. I don't like having to rebuild my stuff every year.

But, according to studies made 50 years ago, running coolant temp of 100 degrees will make the rings wear 40 times faster than when coolant temps are 160 degrees or above. The hotter the coolant, the less wear. (I used to have the book that SAE referenced this but don't know where it is today.) Temp over 160 is critical to longevity.

This is the reason I tell anyone who drag races to not use a thermostat. If the water is stopped while you are at full throttle, these hot spots will cause detonation. Even though you can't hear detonation on most race engines, your time slip will reflect it. If you find yourself saying "my car ran 3 to 4 off for no reason" this may be your answer.

Use a restrictor in the flow to the radiator. Back in flathead days a freeze plug in the upper hoses with a 5/8-3/4 hole was the usual fix.
